Performance leaks of the Ryzen processors from Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) point to a big improvement in speeds. When the Ryzen 5 1600X chip was benchmarked against the Core i7-6580K, the AMD processor outperformed the one from Intel in both multi-threaded and single-threaded tests.
Besides performance, AMD beats Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) on price hands down. While the Core i7-6580K will retail at $650, the price of the Ryzen 5 1600X will be only $610.
Similar features and specifications
With regards to specifications, the two enjoy similar features as they both have the same frequencies. Each has 12 threads and 6 cores. While the frequency of the chip from Intel is 3.8GHz, that of the AMD chip is 3.7GHz. Other features of the Ryzen chip include a Base Clock of 3.3 GHz, an L3 Cache of 16MB and 95 watts TDP. The chip from AMD also consumes less power than the one from Intel which suggests that it does not heat up as much.
AMD’s chip delivers a multi-threaded performance of 12,544 and a single-threaded performance of 1,888. Intel’s multi-threaded performance is 8,300 for the Core i7-7600K while the single-threaded performance for the same chip is 2,100.
More value for money
The Ryzen chip does equally better when compared to other i7 chips. With regards to the Core i7-6900K chip, the Ryzen chip provides approximately 50 percent extra performance at an extra cost of only $15.
The chip from the NASDAQ stock is expected to be launched in March. With its performance and price advantages, it is likely to have an edge over Intel in the desktop market. Previously, Intel had dominated the market. This started with the release of the initial Core 2 Duo chips about eleven years ago and which was quickly followed by the release of the Core 2 Quad. Consequently, chips from AMD have consistently failed to capture the market for the x86 series of computers. In the gaming sector, though, Intel is expected to continue its dominance with the Core i7 7700K chip which is currently is the fastest CPU for gaming due to its high frequency.
On Tuesday shares of Advanced Micro Devices Inc rose by 1.23 percent. The NASDAQ stock closed at $13.13 a share.
