Origin Agritech Ltd. (NASDAQ:SEED), a provider of agricultural biotechnology trait and seed and a NASDAQ Stock listed company, and California-based Arcadia Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:RKDA) which develops and sells agricultural nutritional products and productivity traits have announced their partnership to develop the first-ever export of a major corn biotechnology product that was developed in China to the U.S to complete global regulatory trials.
The successful transfer of the corn seed which contains an insect and herb resistance tolerance trait to the Arcadia greenhouse is a big step in Origin’s strategic plan aimed at achieving global regulatory approvals for development and international transfer of grain.
In the agreement, Arcadia will support Origin in consolidating information to be submitted to regulatory authorities in the China, U.S and other countries seeking approval of the corn traits. The project will involve production of hybrid and inbred seed lines under controlled conditions in Arcadia greenhouses.
Origin’s focus and investment is in line with China’s 13th Five Year Plan which seeks to modernize agriculture as the pillar in building a prosperous society. The Chinese government through Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) and the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) has developed a program tofacilitate innovation in the seed industry, beef up competitiveness of China’s agricultural technology industry and develop new varieties of seeds for farmers globally. Through the program, China has demonstrated a strong commitment in advancing its agricultural sector through research and innovation in biotechlogy. Origin is hopeful that China will commercialize corn biotechnology come end of this decade.
