Top seed Novak Djokovic will take on Daniil Medvedev in the semi-final of the Cincinnati Masters on Sunday.
Djokovic has sailed through the three rounds in Cincinnati so far. In the first round, he faced home favorite Sam Querrey. The Serb prevailed 7-5, 6-1 to progress to the round of 16. In that round, he met Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta, who was defeated 6-3, 6-4. That match was a clinical performance from Djokovic as he reached the quarter-finals. There he faced Frenchman Lucas Pouille. Djokovic beat him 7-6(2), 6-1 to reach the semi-final.
The world number 1 has won two Grand Slam titles this year already. He beat Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open final in January. Then he went on to clinch the Wimbledon title in historic circumstances. Djokovic defeated Roger Federer in what was the longest ever Wimbledon final. It was a historic win which took his Grand Slam tally to 16. Federer has 20, and Nadal has 18. Djokovic still has age on his side compared to these two, and he would have set his mind on passing them.
This is the first tournament the Serb is participating in since Wimbledon. He has looked in great touch. Hard courts are his favorite surface, and he has enjoyed the most success on those as well. The majority of his titles throughout his career have come on hard courts. A staggering 55 of 75 titles have come on this surface. With the absence of other top seeds left in the tournament, he will be confident of increasing that tally in Cincinnati.
Djokovic will come up against a man who is in great form. Medvedev picked up his 41st win of the season in his last game. No other player on tour has managed more this year. Rafael Nadal has also won the same number so far. Medvedev faced Andrey Rublev in the quarter-final, which was his 13th game in 19 days. He is competing in tournament after tournament and doing quite well in all of those as well.
Medvedev faced Kyle Edmund in the first round in Cincinnati and beat him 6-2, 7-5. In the next round, he got the better of Benoit Paire. Medvedev beat Jan-Lennard Struff in the next round and then went past Rublev in his most recent encounter. In stark contrast to Djokovic, this is the third tournament Medvedev is playing after Wimbledon.
He lost in the final of the Washington Open to Nick Kyrgios. Then he played at the Canadian Open in Montreal and reached the final there as well. But Rafael Nadal got the better of him in the final. Djokovic and Medvedev have met four times before in their careers, and Djokovic has won on three occasions.
Novak Djokovic vs Daniil Medvedev Prediction
The Serb will be the favorite yet again to get the win and progress to the final. Medvedev will make it tough for him, and the match should go to the third set. But Djokovic should have enough to get past the Russian and make yet another final this year.
