Two of the lower sides in the table will go head to head when Dijon host Bordeaux in the Ligue 1 on Saturday.
Two games in, Dijon are already in the relegation zone. They are in 18th place at the moment, which is exactly where they were at the end of last season. Dijon faced Lens in the relegation playoff last season, where they won 4-2 across the two legs. As it stands, they are in a similar predicament. Dijon have picked up no points in their first two games, scoring just once in the process.
They hosted Saint-Etienne in the first game of the season at the Stade Gaston Gerard. Two early goals from Saint-Etienne set them on their way to the win. Julio Tavares scored a penalty for Dijon, but it was nothing more than a consolation in the end. In the last game, Dijon succumbed to a 1-0 defeat against Toulouse. Despite having no points, their relatively better goal difference means that they are not at the bottom of the table. Dijon finished 11th two seasons ago, but last season was nothing like that. They are one of the favorites to go down this year as well. Manager Stephane Jobard has a tough task ahead of him in his debut season at the club. The onus will be on key players like Tavares to help him in his venture.
Bordeaux are not doing so well themselves this season. They have picked up just one point from their first two games and lie in 16th spot in the table. Despite opening the scoring in their first match, Angers beat them 3-1 in the end. In the last game, they shared the points with Montpellier after a 1-1 draw. Despite their poor tally, they are not in the relegation zone yet due to weaker performances from other teams.Embed from Getty Images
Bordeaux are one of the most successful clubs in French football, but their stock has gone down in recent years. They finished 14th last season, which was a poor showing for a club which has won six Ligue 1 title. The last of those came back in 2009. Bordeaux have fallen off quite steeply, and they have even failed to be in the European spots in Ligue 1 consistently. However, last week’s performance against Montpellier must have been encouraging. Despite the gulf in the two sides from last season they managed to claim a point.
The head to head record between Bordeaux and Dijon is encouraging for the former. Bordeaux have lost just once in their last seven meetings. The last match between the two sides ended in a 1-0 win for Bordeaux.
Dijon vs Bordeaux Prediction
They will be the favorites again this time as well. Bordeaux should get their first win of the campaign to pile more misery upon Dijon. The total goals in the match should be under 2.5, and the game will be tight. Both sides will defend deep, and Bordeaux should have enough to nick a close win.
