Roma will host Genoa at the Stadio Olimpico in their first Serie A game of the season on Sunday.
After finishing sixth last season, Roma want an improvement this time. Finishing in the top four and securing Champions League football will be the priority for them. Roma started last season with Eusebio Di Francesco as their manager. He was loved at the club after Roma’s exploits the season before. But Roma’s Champions League exit coupled with their poor league form paved the way for his exit. He was replaced by veteran Claudio Ranieri.
Ranieri failed to change the fortunes and Roma finished sixth as the season ended. Paulo Fonseca was appointed as the Roma manager this summer. He was in charge of Shakhtar Donetsk before and this is certainly a step up for him. Fonseca has overseen transfer window for Roma that was loaded with activity. In terms of arrivals they signed Leonardo Spinazzola from Juventus at left-back. Roma also signed midfielder Amadou Diawara from Napoli and made Bryan Cristante’s deal permanent from Atalanta.Embed from Getty Images
Kostas Manolas was the biggest loss in the window as he departed for Napoli. Luca Pellegrini also left as he joined Juventus for €22 million. Edin Dzeko will continue to lead the line for Roma and the likes of Lorenzo Pellegrini and Nicolo Zaniolo will assist him. Roma have looked strong in preseason and they will hope to get their campaign to a winning start.
They will be up against Genoa, a team which narrowly avoided relegation last season. Genoa finished in 17th place. They had 38 points when the season ended, which is same as Empoli. But a better head to head record meant that they survived. It was a very close shave for them and it pushed them to change the manager. Cesare Prandelli was shown the door even though he managed to keep Genoa in the Serie A. In his place they appointed Aurelio Andreazzoli.Embed from Getty Images
Andreazzoli was the Empoli manager last season and he failed to keep them up. Genoa have offered him a clean slate and he has taken the opportunity. He has done some good deals in the transfer window which should come good this season. The biggest one of them was Stefano Sturaro. The midfielder was signed from Juventus and he should bolster their choices in that area. Goalkeeper Ionut Radu came over from Inter, and so did striker Andrea Favilli from Juventus.
Roma have dominated the head to head results in recent years. They have not tasted defeat in the last 10 meetings between these two sides. Their last meeting ended in a goalless draw which took place in May.
AS Roma vs Genoa Prediction
Roma will be the favorites to pick up the three points on the opening weekend. Their squad is more capable and they should get the better of Genoa. A clean sheet is also likely for Roma as Genoa’s attack was one of the worst in the Serie A last season. The total goals should be under 2.5 in the game.
