Fifth seed Daniil Medvedev will take on Hugo Dellien in the second round of the US Open on Wednesday.
Medvedev has been on a roll in the last couple of weeks. Since losing in the third round at Wimbledon, he had reached the final at three ATP events. In the Washington Open, Nick Kyrgios beat him to claim the title. Medvedev played in the Canadian Open in the coming week. There Rafael Nadal defeated him in the final to claim the title. After the heartbreak in Montreal, he crossed the hurdle in Cincinnati.
He beat David Goffin in the final to claim his second title in 2019. Medvedev beat Novak Djokovic en route to the final in Cincinnati. His recent string of wins has earned him an admirable record. Medvedev has won the most games this season among all male players. He was tied with Rafael Nadal and the success in Cincinnati earned him the record outright. Those wins helped him achieve a ranking of fifth in the world, which is the highest he’s ever been.Embed from Getty Images
He faced Indian Prajnesh Gunneswaran in the first round at the US Open. Medvedev got the win in straight sets, winning 6-4, 6-1, 6-2. He dominated the match, and his serve was a major reason why. The Russian won 82% of the points on his first serve. He was clinical as well and converted 7 out of his 8 break points to put Gunneswaran to the sword. The farthest he’s reached at the US Open is the third round, which he achieved last time. The onus will be on him to better that performance.
Dellien’s path to the second round was not as straightforward. He faced Korean Kwon Soon-woo in the first round. Dellien was strong in the first two sets and won both of them. But Kwon fought back and took the next set. He was leading 3-2 in the fourth when he retired from the match due to an injury. Kwon was looking strong, but Dellien got a lucky break due to his retirement.
Now into the second round of the US Open, Dellien is making strides he has not made before. Aside from this tournament he has reached the main draw of a Grand Slam event only once before. That was earlier this year at the French Open. He managed to reach the second round of Rolan Garros.Embed from Getty Images
Dellien became the first Bolivian player since 1984 to win an ATP game when he claimed a win in the Rio Open this year. He is currently ranked 84th in the world, which is in stark contrast with the fifth spot which Medvedev occupies. The two have not met before in a professional match in their careers.
Daniil Medvedev vs Hugo Dellien Prediction
Medvedev will go into the game as the favorite to progress to the third round. He is on a great run recently, and Dellien will have a tough time dealing with the Russian. Medvedev should get the win in straight sets to reach the third round.
