Third seed Roger Federer will face Bosnian Damir Dzumhur in the second round of the US Open.
Federer faced unseeded Indian Sumit Nagal in the first round in New York. He was the huge favorite to get the win, but Nagal took the first set 6-4 to everyone’s surprise. Federer made 19 unforced errors in this set, and Nagal took advantage. This made the Swiss move into second gear, and he claimed the next three sets to claim a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 win. He hit 12 aces in the game compared to none from Nagal. Federer converted 7 out of his 13 break points in the game.
It was Nagal’s Grand Slam debut, and he showed glimpses of his talent in the game. But Federer’s class was too much for him to handle. “It was a tough first set for me. He played pretty strong so credit to him,” said Federer after the game. “I was missing a lot of balls, so I was trying to cut down the unforced errors. Hopefully, it will get better.”Embed from Getty Images
Now 38 years of age, Federer is still going strong. He has won the US Open five times, the last of which came back in 2008. From 2004, Federer won the next five straight US Open titles. Since then he has failed to lift the trophy at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. He has reached the final only once since 2008. That was in 2015 when Novak Djokovic beat him in the final. Federer went out in the fourth round last year when he lost to Australian John Millman.
Federer will come up against Bosnian Damir Dzumhur in the second round. Dzumhur has made the main draw at the US Open five times, but he has failed to make it past the third round. He reached the third round in 2017 when Andrey Rublev defeated him at that stage. He crashed out in the first round last year at the US Open.Embed from Getty Images
Dzumhur faced Elliot Benchetrit in the first round this time. Benchetrit took the first set 6-4, which brought out the best from Dzumhur. He took the next three sets to win the match 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-0. Dzumhur took the last eight games of the match to win in dominating fashion. He won 77% of the points on his first serve.
Federer and Dzumhur have met twice so far in their careers. Both those meetings came in 2015, and Federer won both of them. They met at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, and the Swiss won in straight sets each time. The difference in their rankings is jarring, as Dzumhur is 96 spots below Federer.
Roger Federer vs Damir Dzumhur Prediction
Federer will go into the tie as the huge favourite to progress into the third round. He looked good in the first round, and his expertise and quality will be too much for Dzumhur to handle. Federer should get the win in straight sets to end Dzumhur’s tournament prematurely.
