Manchester United will travel to St. Mary’s Stadium to face Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday.
The Red Devils need to bounce back after last week’s debacle at Old Trafford. Crystal Palace were the visiting side, and a home win looked to be on the cards. But the London side flipped the script and claimed a 2-1 win. Patrick van Aanholt’s late winner gave Palace all three points. Old Trafford was stunned into silence after Daniel James’ equalizer had given the fans hope of those three points. But it was not to be, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer suffered his first defeat of the season.
Despite that loss, United are fifth in the table. They have got four points from their opening three games. They hosted Chelsea in their first game and recorded a comprehensive 4-0 victory. Then they traveled to Wolves in their second game where the game ended in a 1-1 draw. Paul Pogba missed a penalty which would have given them the victory. United missed another penalty against Palace. It occurred when they were trailing 0-1, and Marcus Rashford stepped up. He had converted against Chelsea, but this time the woodwork denied him.
Solskjaer will need to sort out his taker for the next game. Anthony Martial looks like he will miss the visit to Southampton after he injured his thigh against Palace. Luke Shaw also succumbed to an injury against Palace and Ashley Young replaced him in that game. Shaw looks set to be out for about a month. Young and Diogo Dalot are the options Solskjaer has to replace Shaw. Meanwhile, Alexis Sanchez is on his way to Inter Milan if reports are to be believed.
As for Southampton, they claimed their first win of the season last week. The Saints faced Brighton and won 2-0 at the Amex Stadium. An early red card for Brighton was a turning point, and Southampton did not waste the opportunity to exert their dominance. New recruit Moussa Djenepo scored with his first touch after coming on to give his side the lead. Nathan Redmond made it 2-0 later to seal the win.Embed from Getty Images
Southampton had lost their first two games of the season to Burnley and Liverpool respectively. Ralph Hasenhuttl will be relieved to get on the board in terms of points. Michael Obafemi scored on Tuesday to give Southampton a 1-0 win over Fulham in the EFL Cup.
However, Obafemi will be a doubt for the visit of United due to a thigh problem. Ryan Bertrand will be ruled out courtesy of an ankle injury. Nathan Redmond has an ankle problem as well, and they will make a late call on him. Djenepo should get his first league start against United.
Southampton vs Manchester United Prediction
Southampton will make it tough, but United should get back to winning ways. The total goals should be over 2.5, and both sides should score in the match. United’s quality should be too much for the Saints, and they should get the three points.
