Real Madrid will travel to the El Madrigal to face Villarreal in La Liga on Sunday.
After two games of the new season, Real Madrid are in fourth place. Their first game was a trip to Celta Vigo. Despite a red card to Luka Modric in the first half, Real fought to win 3-1. Karim Benzema, Toni Kroos, and Lucas Vasquez were the scorers on the day. After much speculation about his future, Gareth Bale started the game on the right side for Real. Their first home game was against Valladolid, which ended in a 1-1 draw. It looked as though Karim Benzema’s late goal had given them the three points, but Sergio Guardiola equalized for Valladolid.
James Rodriguez started the game against Valladolid. The Colombian is another player whose future was in doubt in the transfer window with Bale. Now it looks like both of them will play a significant part in the Bernabeu this season. As a result, Luka Jovic has not started a game for his new club so far. The former Eintracht Frankfurt striker has been limited to two appearances off the bench so far. Benzema is still the first option for Zinedine Zidane for now.
Eden Hazard, the big signing of the summer, is yet to make his Real Madrid bow. The Belgian’s injury means that he will be unavailable for selection this weekend. When he returns to full fitness, Zidane will have a new problem to solve. For now, it looks like Bale will have his starting spot despite not impressing against Valladolid. The transfer window is still ongoing, but it seems like the Los Blancos will do no other major signings. Alphonso Areola could arrive in a swap deal with Keylor Navas, but that is all.
Meanwhile, Villarreal have claimed just one point from their opening games. That point was earned in a hugely entertaining 4-4 draw with Granada on the opening weekend. Villarreal led by two goals in the final stages of the game but could not defend their lead. Last week they faced Levante, and something similar happened. They were leading till the 68th minute before Levante scored twice to snatch the win.Embed from Getty Images
The transfer window has been a busy one for Villarreal, as numerous players departed the club. Pablo Fornals, Denis Cheryshev, and Roberto Soriano were the significant departures. In their place, Ruben Pena and Alberto Moreno were signed by Javier Calleja.
The head to head record is surprisingly even. Villarreal have lost just once in their last four meetings. The previous three meetings have seen 13 goals in total, with four goals in each of those games.
Villarreal vs Real Madrid Prediction
Real Madrid will be the considerable favorites to get the win over Villarreal. Despite playing away from home, the return of Luka Modric will be a massive boost for them. Vinicius could make his return to the starting lineup as well. The total goals should be over 2.5 in the game, and both sides should find the back of the net.
