Elina Svitolina will take on the home favorite Serena Williams in the first women’s semi-final at the US Open.
Svitolina is vying to reach the first Grand Slam final of her career. She reached her first semi-final at Wimbledon this year, and the Ukranian will hope to better that in New York. The fifth seed has impressed in her five games so far at the tournament. She defeated Venus Williams in the second round, and her sister Serena will be the fourth American opponent Svitolina will face in New York.
Her quarter-final match was against Johanna Konta, and Svitolina won 6-4, 6-4. She has won all her four games so far in straight sets. Despite that, Svitolina’s serve has been broken seven times so far in the tournament. Her highest ranking came in 2017 when she was third in the world. She is ranked fifth now, hoping to capture her first Grand Slam title.Embed from Getty Images
Much of Svitolina’s game is based on her defensive expertise. She can keep most balls in play, which should be a problem for Williams. Simona Halep is a similar player to Svitolina, and she beat Williams comprehensively at Wimbledon. Svitolina is yet to win a title this year, and clinching the US Open would be a great way to do so. She will face a daunting task against Williams on Thursday.
Serena Williams is looking for her 24th Grand Slam singles title, which would see her tie Margaret Court for the most in history. Her last major title came in 2017 when she won the Australian Open. Since then she has not been able to exert her dominance like before. Williams has lost three Grand Slam finals in the last two years, which included the US Open final last year. So far in New York, Williams has dropped just one set. That happened in the second round when Caty McNally took the first set. But since then she has dominated her opponents. The American faced Wang Qiang in the quarter-final and demolished the Chinese 6-1, 6-0. She won 90% points on her first serve, compared to a measly 17% for her opponent. She converted all five of her break points and did not concede a single one of her own. The manner of her win would have given her a lot of confidence.
The head to head record between Svitolina and Williams is on the side of the American. She has won four out of the five clashes between the two. Svitolina won their last encounter, which came in the Olympics in 2016.
Elina Svitolina vs Serena Williams Prediction
Williams will be the favorite for this one, but Svitolina’s game will cause her problems. The Ukranian should take one set off her by the strength of her defensive game-plan. However, Williams should have enough to make the final in the chase of her 24th Grand Slam title. Svitolina might have to wait for a bit to capture her first.
