Monaco will look to climb out of the relegation zone when they host Marseille at the Stade Louis II on Sunday.
Just like last season, Monaco have had to face adversity this campaign. Monaco were in danger of relegation throughout last season, but they barely survived in the closing weeks. Dijon in 18th place were just two points below them after the last week. Manager Leonardo Jardim will hope for a better ending this time. After four games this season, Moncao are yet to pick up a win. They are in 19th place, having picked up just two points so far.
Their first two games of the season were both 3-0 losses. Lyon dealt the blow in the first week, and Metz followed it up with a thrashing of their own. Monaco received a red card in each of those matches, which was a big factor in those heavy defeats. The last two games have been 2-2 draws, against Nimes and Strasbourg respectively. Goals from Islam Slimani and Wissam Ben Yedder gave them a 2-0 lead against Nimes. But Jemerson was sent off for Monaco, which allowed Nimes to snatch a draw.Embed from Getty Images
Monaco faced Strasbourg in their last week, and Slimani was on the score-sheet again. The Algerian netted a brace, and Monaco were leading 2-1 heading into the final few minutes. But Adrien Thomasson scored for Strasbourg and denied Monaco their first win of the season. Still, they can draw positives from the game. They have improved compared to their first two games, and Jardim will be looking for his first win against Marseille.
Marseille are in a much better place than Monaco. They are in eighth place in the table. Despite that position, they are just two points below the leaders Paris Saint-Germain. However, their season did not start as well. They picked up just one point from their first two games. Reims visited Stade Velodrome in the opening week, and they beat Marseille 2-0. In the next game, Marseille could only secure a goalless draw against Nantes.
Marseille’s last two games have overseen two wins. They beat Nice 2-1 before claiming a narrow 1-0 win over Saint-Etienne. Dario Benedetto scored in both those games. The striker was signed from Boca Juniors, and he has hit the ground running. With the likes of Dimitri Payet and Bouna Sarr around him, he should continue this form in the coming weeks.Embed from Getty Images
Monaco hold a slight edge in their head to head record against Marseille. They have lost just once in the last eight meetings. However, Marseille have got the last victory, a 3-2 result last year. These two sides last played in January and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Monaco vs Marseille Prediction
However, the current picture tells a different tale, and Marseille will be favorites to get the three points. Monaco have improved recently but the first win of the season should continue to elude them. The total goals in the game should be over 2.5 and Marseille will definitely get on the score-sheet.
