Celtic will travel to Roazhon Park to face Rennes in their first Europa League match of the season.
The season has started brightly for Celtic. After five games of the Scottish Premiership, they sit in first place in the table. Celtic have won all their games in dominating fashion. In that span, they have scored 18 goals and conceded just three. Their last league game was the closest win so far. Celtic traveled to face Hamilton and claimed a 1-0 victory. An early goal from James Forrest was enough to secure the three points at the SuperSeal Stadium.
Odsonne Edouard has had a strong start to the season for Celtic. In four league appearances, he has three goals and an assist to his name. Along with Edouard, the likes of Forrest and Michael Johnston have also chipped in with goals. Celtic tried to qualify for the Champions League, but couldn’t go ahead in the qualifying stages. CFR Cluj defeated them in the third qualifying round by an aggregate score of 5-4. Then they had to navigate past a Europa League playoff as well.Embed from Getty Images
They faced Swedish side AIK and recorded a 6-1 win on aggregate across the two legs. Celtic played in the Europa League last season as well. They made it to the knockout stages from a group consisting of Salzburg, Rosenborg, and Leipzig. Spanish side Valencia knocked them out of the tournament in the round of 32. Manager Neil Lennon will hope for a better result this time.
Celtic will face French side Rennes in their opener. They have excelled in the Ligue 1 this season and are second in the league. In their five games so far, Rennes have won three. Only defending champions Paris Saint-Germain have accumulated more points so far. Their league position is in stark contrast to last season when they finished in tenth place. A win in the French Cup final saw Rennes make the Europa League group stage this season.
They defeated Paris Saint-Germain on penalties to claim a rare trophy. Rennes had finished fifth the season before to make the Europa League last season. Their previous European encounter before that came in 2011 when they played the Europa League. Rennes reached the round of 16 last season, where Arsenal knocked them out. They picked up a win over the English side at home but were unable to defend their lead in the second leg.Embed from Getty Images
Despite their great start to the season, Rennes are winless in their last two games. Nice claimed a 2-1 win against them before Brest held out for a goalless draw on Saturday. They will look to get back to winning ways against Celtic.
Rennes vs Celtic Prediction
The game will be a tough one for both sides, and a draw seems like the most likely result. Both sides should score, and the total goals should be over 2.5 in this game. Celtic and Rennes have excellent offensive output, and it will be an entertaining game for the neutral.
