Borussia Dortmund will travel to the Sinobo Stadium to take on Slavia Prague in the Champions League on Wednesday.
These two sides lie in arguably the most robust group in the group stage this season. Barcelona and Inter Milan are the other two sides in their group. Those two are the favorites on paper to progress, but Dortmund are not far behind. They hosted Barcelona in the first game and the game ended in a goalless draw. It was Dortmund who had more efforts in that game, and they must have been disappointed with just one point.
Dortmund topped their Champions League group last season. They lost just one game in the group stage and got a knockout tie with Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs won the tie 4-0 on aggregate and knocked out Dortmund prematurely. Dortmund’s best finish in recent years came in 2013 when they went all the way to the final. Since then they have reached the quarter-finals three times. The other two teams in the group are much tougher on paper so Dortmund will need the three points against Slavia desperately to qualify.
After impressing last season in the Bundesliga, Dortmund have stuttered a bit this time. Under new coach Lucian Favre Dortmund ran Bayern close for the title and were in contention till the final day. They finished just two points below Bayern in the end. After six games of this season they are in eighth place. Dortmund are only three points behind leaders Bayern, but the gap in positions is jarring. The resurgence of other teams means that the competition for places is going to be tight.
Slavia Prague’s Champions League campaign also started with a draw. They traveled to Milan to face Inter. It was a daunting task as Antonio Conte’s side have started the season in terrific fashion. Against all the odds they took the lead through Peter Olayinka. They held on till the very end, but Nicolo Barella rescued a point for Inter in stoppage time.Embed from Getty Images
After winning the league title last season, Slavia are going strong this time as well. They are unbeaten in the league after 11 games, winning 9 of them. Slavia’s most recent match was against Mlada Boleslav, and they claimed a 1-0 win to keep their unbeaten run going. Olayinka got the only goal in the game.
Slavia’s defence has been terrific this season. In 11 league games, they have conceded just twice. This suggests that they will adopt a similar approach against Dortmund and keep it tight at the back. These two sides have not met in a professional encounter before.
Slavia Prague vs Borussia Dortmund Prediction
The game will be tight, as Slavia’s defensive record at home is great. Dortmund’s last Champions League game was goalless, which tells that they can sit back. The total goals should be Under 2.5 in this game. Dortmund have more quality in attack, and they should get a close win. But it won’t be easy, as Slavia is a tough opposition.
