The Adelaide 36ers will visit the Qudos Bank Arena on Saturday to play the Sydney Kings in their first NBL game of the season.
The Kings played the Cairns Taipans in their first game of the season. They claimed a 79-71 win in a low-scoring game. Casper Ware scored 23 points to lead his side to the win. He also had 5 assists in the game. The Kings were trailing at the end of the third quarter, but they outscored the Taipans 22-8 in the last period. Jae’Sean Tate had 14 points and 9 rebounds in the game. Andrew Bogut also put in a strong defensive display, and he had 12 rebounds.
Sydney finished third in the regular season last time. They won 18 regular-season games, which is the same as table-toppers Perth. The Kings faced Melbourne United in the first round of the playoffs. Melbourne claimed a 2-0 win to knock Sydney out. After failing to make the playoffs for five seasons, Sydney crossed that hurdle last time. They will hope to go even further this time.
Andrew Gaze was the Sydney coach for three seasons, but he stepped down from his duties after the last campaign ended. Will Weaver will be the man in the dugout this season for the Kings. Andrew Bogut was the club MVP last season, but Casper Ware can challenge him for that title now. Ware was with Melbourne United for the past three seasons, where he made the All-NBL First Team three times and won a championship. He should prove to be a great addition to Sydney.
Unlike most other teams in the division, the 36ers have not played a game yet. They narrowly missed out on the playoffs last season. Adelaide won 14 out of their 28 games in the regular season, which was the same tally as the Brisbane Bullets. But the Bullets had the better overall points percentage which enabled them to make the playoffs on the tiebreaker.Embed from Getty Images
The season before, Adelaide went all the way to the Final where they lost to Melbourne United. Despite the failure to make the playoffs last season, Adelaide have persisted with coach Joey White. He has been at the club for six seasons now, and the longevity has helped his case.
The current squad will be lead by veterans like Brendan Teys and Kevin White. Teys is the captain of the squad, and he has been at Adelaide since 2013. They will also have Ramone Moore at their disposal, and he was crowned as the NBL Best Sixth Man in 2018. Moore averaged 9.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game off the bench last season.
