Bordeaux will hope to continue their stunning start to the season when they host Saint-Etienne in the Ligue 1 on Sunday.
Last season Bordeaux finished in 14th place, which was a disappointing spot to end the season in. Nine games into this season, they have bettered that by a long distance. Bordeaux are fourth in the table and in line for the Europa League next season at this stage. They are in a tight competition with the likes of Lille and Stade Reims for the European spots. Opponents Saint-Etienne have 11 points compared to Bordeaux’s 15, but they are down in 13th place.
Bordeaux’s improved attack has been one of the main features this season. They have scored 15 goals in the league so far, and only two other teams can better that tally. Their defence has been far from the best, but the offence has bailed them out on numerous occasions. Nicolas de Preville and Jimmy Briand are their joint top-scorers in the league with three goals each. Briand is deployed as the striker with the duo of de Preville and Hwang Ui-jo behind him.
In their last game before the international break, Bordeaux travelled to the Stadium Municipal to face Toulouse. De Preville gave them the lead in the first minute, and Pablo soon doubled that lead. Hwang made it 3-0 in the second half to seal the win. Toulouse grabbed a consolation to make it 3-1, but Bordeaux won comfortably in the end. They have lost just once in the last eight games, which was against champions PSG.
In sharp contrast to Bordeaux, Saint-Etienne’s form has dropped this season. They finished fourth last season to claim a place in this season’s Europa League. But this campaign they are languishing in 13th place after nine games. However, the position does not do much justice to them. They have accumulated 11 points, which is just three less than Stade Reims in sixth place.
Saint-Etienne were on a terrible run last month as they went seven matches without a win. In that time they lost five and drew two. But they have improved since then. Saint-Etienne have won two out of the last three games, drawing the other. They hosted Lyon in their last league game at the Geoffroy-Guichard. It was a tough game on paper, but they managed to grind out a 1-0 win. Robert Beric got a late winner to send the home crowd into raptures.
Saint-Etienne have scored just eight league goals this season, which is a rate of worse than a goal per game. The likes of Wahbi Khazri and Ryad Boudebouz need to step up in the coming weeks.
Bordeaux vs Saint-Etienne Tips
Bordeaux have lost just one of their last six meetings with Saint-Etienne, and a similar trend should follow on Sunday. The home side will be the favorites to get the win against Saint-Etienne. The total goals will be less than 2.5, and a clean sheet is also likely for Bordeaux.
