Marseille will look to end their winless run when they host Strasbourg at the Stade Velodrome on Sunday in the Ligue 1.
After nine games, Marseille are eighth in the league table. Their season started well, and they were on a three-game winning streak recently. But their last four games have not been kind to them. Marseille have drawn three of them, and the most recent one was a loss. They traveled to the Stade de la Licorne to face Amiens. After Haitam Aleesami scored for the home side, Dario Benedetto equalised for Marseille.
But Amiens scored twice to claim a 3-1 win on the night. It was a crushing loss for Marseille whose winless streak was extended. In their last three games, Marseille have scored just thrice. They have scored 10 goals in total this season in the Ligue 1. Out of those, half have been scored by Benedetto. The Argentine forward arrived from Boca Juniors in the summer, and he has impressed immediately. He combined well with talisman Dimitri Payet in the opening weeks, but that has not been seen recently.
Payet received a red card in a draw against Montpellier, which resulted in a ban for the playmaker. He has been sorely missed in the last few games. Payet’s creativity is crucial for Marseille, and they will be glad to have him back. Midfielder Kevin Strootman was also unavailable in the loss against Amiens due to accumulation of yellow cards. The Dutch international will also be back for the Strasbourg clash.
Strasbourg are on the cusp of the relegation zone as it stands. They are in 17th place, separated from Toulouse in 18th only by virtue of goal difference. The team which finished in 18th will have to play the relegation playoff to preserve their status. Out of the nine games, they have played, Strasbourg have only won twice. Those two wins have come in the last four attempts.
The season started poorly for Strasbourg as they were winless in their first five games. Their first win of the season came last month when they beat Nantes 2-1. Dimitri Lienard scored their first goal, and Ludovic Ajorque scored a late winner to hand his side the three points. Ajorque was the hero again when Strasbourg claimed their second win of the season.
Facing Montpellier, Ajorque scored the only goal in a 1-0 win. Strasbourg’s last game ended in a narrow 1-0 loss against Dijon. Marseille have dominated the head to head record against Strasbourg in recent times. They have not lost in the last eight meetings, claiming four wins in the process. The last meeting between the two sides ended in a 1-1 draw.
Marseille vs Strasbourg Tips
Marseille will be the favorites to continue that dominance. Strasbourg’s attack has been suspect, and Marseille should get the victory in a tight game. The total goals should be under 2.5 in the game. Marseille should get the three points to get back to winning ways and keep Strasbourg in relegation trouble.
