Monaco will host Rennes at the Stade Louis II in the Ligue 1 on Sunday.
After barely surviving last time, Monaco are near a relegation battle yet again. They are on 9 points, which is just one more than Metz who are in the last place. Due to their superior goal difference, Monaco are in 16th place as of now. Last season they finished in 17th place and evaded the relegation playoff place by just two points. Manager Leonardo Jardim will hope to avoid a similar scenario this time.
Monaco’s season started poorly, but they have picked up the slack to some extent recently. Their last three games have brought two wins which have pushed them above the relegation zone. The first of those came against Nice. Aleksandr Golovin scored twice, and Wissam Ben Yedder added a third as Monaco claimed a 3-1 victory over Nice. That was their first win of the season at their seventh attempt.
Jardim’s side did not have to wait long for their second win. In the next game, they hosted a promoted Brest side who are doing quite well so far. Ben Yedder opened the scoring for them and set them on their way to a 4-1 win. Islam Slimani, Gelson Martin, and Keita Balde got the other goals for Monaco. They faced Montpellier in the last game and fell to a 3-1 loss. Ben Yedder scored in that game as well, which took his tally to six for the season. The Frenchman has made a great impact on the side since joining from Sevilla.
As for Rennes, they desperately need to get back to winning ways. Rennes have not won in the last eight games in all competitions. In that time they have claimed just three points in the league. Their season started in stunning fashion as they won their first three games. Rennes beat champions PSG in that run, but it has all fell apart after that.
Despite having a solid defensive record, their poor attack has let them down. Rennes have scored eight goals in nine league games, which is a poor rate. On the other hand, they have conceded just 7, a tally which is bettered by only three other sides. Rennes hosted Stade Reims in the last game. Despite having 64% possession in the game, they lost 1-0. They had just three shots on target compared to seven from Reims.
These two sides have played out many draws in the past. Five of the last nine meetings have ended in draws. Rennes claimed a win last season, a 2-1 result in the same fixture.
Monaco vs Rennes Prediction
Just like in recent years, this fixture should see some goals this time. The total goals should be over 2.5 in this game, and both sides should find the back of the net. Monaco have been in form of late, and they are the slight favorites to get the win. But Rennes won’t make it easy as they look to end their winless run.
