On their ongoing tour to Australia, New Zealand’s best chance of beating the home side in a Test match was in the Pink Ball Test. However, the Kiwis were comprehensively thumped by 296 runs in the Pink Ball Test at Perth and Australia now leads the 3-match series 1-0.
The second Test of the series will begin from the 26th December at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground. Australia will begin as favorites for the match considering their recent form and their home advantage.
Australia have now won 3 Tests in a row at home this season and are looking better with every game. They have a solid batting unit and one of the best bowling attacks in the world at their disposal.
Young Marnus Labuschagne hundred and fifty in the last Test confirmed why he is one of the best young batsman in the format right now. Even though Steve Smith failed again, Australia’s long batting order with contributions from Joe Burns, Travis Head and captain Tim Paine ensured that they were safe.Embed from Getty Images
Australia’s bowling has been the best for a while. Even though they lost Josh Hazlewood in the middle of the 1st Test, the team had enough arsenals to bowl out New Zealand with ease. Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon are in their prime at present. Fast bowler James Pattinson is likely to replace the injured Hazlewood in the 2nd Test and that gives the bowling attack enough potency.
New Zealand was below par in the 1st Test and will really need to get their act together before the series slips away from them. Barring Ross Taylor and wicket-keeper BJ Watling to an extent, their batting order simply couldn’t cope with Australia’s bowling strength. Captain Kane Williamson would have to lead from the front and the likes of Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls and Colin de Grandhomme would have to really make their experience count.
New Zealand’s bowling was better with Neil Wagner yet again leading the way. Tim Southee’s 9 wickets in the last Test will keep him in good stead. Off-spinner Mitchell Santner, however, was ineffective and that is a concern. Lockie Ferguson’s injury is a crushing blow to the team as the young pacer was a great prospect for this series. It remains to be seen how his replacement Kyle Jamieson fares.
Australia vs New Zealand, 2nd Test: Cricket Prediction
Australia have now beaten New Zealand in 5 of the last 6 Tests played between the two sides. They will begin as clear favorites for the 2nd Test at Melbourne.
The pitch there is usually good for batting in the first two days and helps seam bowlers consistently through. The team batting first should post 350 plus runs on the board. But batting on the last day will not be easy.
New Zealand will hope to put up a better fight in this match but they are up against a side that is brimming with confidence. Considering Australia’s home advantage, their current form and overall strength of the squad they should be backed as the winners of the 2nd Test.
