South Africa vs England Match Preview
England will begin their tour of South Africa with the 1st Test all set to begin on December 26 at Centurion.
England and South Africa have produced some great Test contests in the past and this 4-Test series promises to be an enthralling one. South Africa are on a rebuilding phase right now and have just suffered a 0-3 loss against India on an away tour. England too are coming off a 0-1 loss against New Zealand on their recent away tour. Playing at home, however, South Africa would fancy their chances against a tired-looking England.
South Africa Match Form
South Africa’s batting has led them down recently. They have some solid names in Dean Elgar, Quinton de Kock and captain Faf du Plessis who are likely to have an impact on the game. Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram should be watched out for as well.Embed from Getty Images
Their bowling has good depth with Kagiso Rabada, Vernon Philander, Andile Phehlukwayo and Keshav Maharaj being the ones who will be doing the bulk of the work. Rookie fast bowlers Dane Paterson and Beuran Hendricks may get a chance too.
England Match Form
England undoubtedly has a solid Test unit. However, they do look ragged at present and don’t seem to have got any rest post their ODI World Cup triumph. Regardless, they would be hoping to shrug that off and fight it out against South Africa.
Captain Joe Root is fresh from a 226 against New Zealand in the last Test and would be leading the batting unit along with Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow and Joe Denly. How they fare against the South African Pacers would be interesting to see.
England’s bowling has potency but they have struggled recently on flat decks. The experienced Stuart Broad and the young and exciting Jofra Archer would certainly be the bowling pillars for England in the Test and the series. Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes provide further depth to their bowling. They can really exploit the vulnerabilities in the South African batting.
South Africa vs England, 1st Test: Cricket Betting Tips
In the last 5 Tests between South Africa and England, 2 have been won by the Proteas and 3 by England. Given the slide that South Africa has suffered recently, England should have the edge. Furthermore, the last time England had toured South Africa, they had won the series 2-1.
The SuperSport Park in Centurion is a good surface for batting that also helps the seam bowlers get generous movement and bounce. The average team total in this game should be around 250-300 runs per innings.
England will certainly feel good about their chances. However, playing at home South Africa would have more confidence. They have plenty of new faces in the squad and a new coach in Mark Boucher. This might just buoy them up to be free and play their best.
This will likely be a closely-fought Test match and England are certainly the stronger side. That being said, they also look a little fatigued right now. Thus, back to South Africa to win the 1st Test of the series.
