Rennes will host Nantes at the Stade de la Route de Lorient to kick off the round of fixtures in the Ligue 1 on Friday.
Rennes Match Form
Rennes are still going strong, and they are third in the table. Finishing there will give them an entry into the Champions League for next season. They finished tenth last season, and this campaign has seen a great jump. Manager Julien Stephan has improved hugely in his second season at the club. Montpellier in fourth place are four points below Rennes as it stands. Marseille are in third place, and they are a good five points clear of Rennes.
In their last game, Rennes faced Angers in the French Cup. The game was hugely entertaining, and Rennes claimed a 5-4 win. Scores were tied at 3-3 after regulation, and the game went into extra time. Yann Gboho and Jeremy Gelin scored for Rennes, and they secured their passage to the next round. In their last league game, Rennes faced Nice. Flavien Tait scored the equaliser to secure a point for Rennes in a 1-1 draw.
Despite a modest attacking unit, Rennes have impressed due to their great defence. Only leaders Paris Saint-Germain have conceded fewer goals in the league. Rennes’ last five league games have seen under 2.5 goals in total. Four of those games have ended in a 1-0 win for either side. Stephan will hope that his side plays on the offensive end as they did against Angers in the coming weeks.
Nantes Match Form
Just like Rennes, Nantes have also surprised many people this season. They are in sixth place as they look to get into the European places. Last season Nantes finished in 12th place, and their rise has been similar to that of Rennes. They will face Rennes on the back of a loss against Bordeaux in their last game. Nantes faced Lyon in the French Cup in the game before that. In a whirlwind encounter, Lyon claimed a 4-3 win to knock Nantes out. Despite the loss, the fact that they scored three goals was a plus. Nantes have only scored 19 goals in 21 league games this season. A strong defence has kept them going, but the attack needs to keep up in the coming weeks. Their goal difference is zero, which is not a positive sign for coach Christian Gourcuff.
Three of the last six league meetings between these two sides have ended in draws. Only one of those games has seen over 2.5 goals in total, and these clashes tend to be close.
Rennes vs Nantes Betting Tips
A similar pattern should follow on Friday, and the total goals should be under 2.5 in the game. Rennes are favorites to claim a narrow win and keep their Champions League push alive. Nantes will provide a tough fight, but a 1-0 win for Rennes seems like a probable result.
