Serie A was one of the many football leagues that were stopped midway because of the ongoing pandemic situation. Right now, there is uncertainty whether the 2019-20 season of the top Italian football league will resume as the Italian government has ruled out team training before May 18.
Regardless, this will be a good time to look back and assess who were the best emerging young stars from the 2019-20 season of Serie A.
Sandro Tonali is already being compared to former Italian football legends and for good reason. The 19-year-old has a sensational pass, has terrific play-making ability and has displayed remarkable vision and technique so far. Tonali had an impressive 2.1 key passes per game along with five assists this season for Brescia and would have certainly looked to improved on them. He’s a strong, energetic and aggressive player and we can’t wait to see more of him.
This 21-year-old Japanese footballer has been a revelation in the season for Bologna. He did an amazing job as a defender and showed great ability with the ball. Tomiyasu’s game awareness is exceptional and he is versatile as a player. He makes superb interceptions and knows how to maintain control. While he is still inexperienced, he has shown traces of being a valuable centre in the seasons to come. Perhaps a little more aggression with the ball will really shape this talented player well.
Marash Kumbulla has only featured in 18 Serie A games. However, he has certainly left an impact on them already. At just 20 years of age, the young centre-back has been really impressive and mature as a defender for Hellas Verona. He has been proactive and studies the game well. Kumbulla is swift on the field with the ball and often moves ahead of his opponents. His counter-attacking has been really good and so has been his ability to get to the ball before the forward. Confidence and aggression are two of his greatest strengths and we are sure to see much more of Marash Kumbulla in the coming seasons.
Dušan Vlahović has all the ingredients that make a young star a future prospect. He has power, pace and strength and already looks like a mature player. The 20-year-old Serbian star featured in only 22 games this season. However, the striker was more than impressive and ended up with six goals. He’s strong in the air and quite agile while tackling defenders. Fiorentina will be more than happy to have nabbed this great prospect who is only to get better in the coming years.
Juventus would be thrilled that they invested in Dejan Kulusevski. The 20-year-old Swedish player is proving to be a versatile and strong player who is bound to emerge as a superstar. This left-footed player can produce splendid cuts and shoots and ended up with five goals and seven assists in this season. Kulusevski is incredibly energetic, can suddenly generate grand bursts of speed and can be molded into an outstanding midfielder. Dejan Kulusevski promises a lot and it will be interesting to see how he progresses.
